What Goes Around/Comes Around 1986, 5:00, video
Collaboration: Jon Hilton, audio engineer, Ithaca, NY
Technology vectors: Source sequences are quick and dirty VHS video. I fashioned a crude rotoscope rig with a video monitor and acetate animation cells and peg bar registration. I made 300+ brush and ink drawings from the video frames. Each cell was recorded on VHS video, the video was then edited to the VHS master. I recorded excerpts from my journal of the time, and created other sound elements.
.
The original version was screened once, for the intended audience. I then discarded all the version materials, and created the entire project again, with a consistent visual style, and a narrative that is more accessible to a public audience.
The title graphic is the I-Ching symbol Quan, it represents a traditional gate structure. One can stand on top and perceive the broad expanse of terrain, and understand the big picture. One is also observed from great distance around, and assessed by others.
